ABOUT

A La Jolla Legend Since 1945

Tucked into the coastal charm of La Jolla, Verdes El Ranchero has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood since 1945. Founded by Buzzy Martinez and affectionately known to locals as “The Ranch,” the restaurant has stood the test of time, weathering La Jolla’s transformation from a sleepy seaside village into a destination of global renown.

Where Generations
Come Together

Today, Verdes El Ranchero is lovingly owned and operated by the Green family, who have called the nearby Barber Tract home for over 30 years. Since 2009, Gloria and her daughter Megan have carried the torch, preserving the warm, welcoming spirit that has made “The Ranch” a multi-generational gathering place. It’s not uncommon to find four generations sharing a table, laughing over hand-rolled enchiladas and sipping freshly made margaritas.

Sonoran Roots. Timeless Flavor.

Rooted in Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine, the menu is a celebration of tradition—featuring beloved dishes like chile rellenos, carnitas, tamales, and hearty soups, alongside fresh salads, tostadas, and a thoughtfully curated selection of Mexican beers and tequilas.

Steeped in
History and Heart

The atmosphere is just as rich as the food. Guests dine among vibrant colors, rustic wood finishes, and hand-painted murals—some dating back to the early 1960s—that tell their own stories of Mexico’s culture and craftsmanship. Local artwork adorns the walls, offering both inspiration and a sense of place.

More than a restaurant, Verdes El Ranchero is a living piece of La Jolla’s history—one that invites you to slow down, savor every bite, and feel right at home.
